The Detailing Process

We are often amazed when we see the major transformation of a car after it has been detailed.  What is often underestimated is the time, skill, cost of products, and knowledge to utilize different approaches for each vehicle in order to yield an amazing result.  It is the many steps performed with consistent excellence that make the difference between a great detailing and an average detailing.

The Hand Wash

The Start Of Detailing

The detailing process starts with the car wash.  The car wash process in general is the source of most of the aesthetic damage done to a car's paint.  This is one of the reasons automatic car washes (brushes) are discouraged by auto detailers.  But the hand wash process that is not performed gently and thoughtfully can be just as, or even more, harmful to your paint.

Paint Decontamination

Washing alone cannot remove contamination that has bonded to your paint.

The deep cleansing of the paint is essential to the effectiveness and durability of the wax, sealant, or ceramic coating.

Similar to a skin facial treatment, a variety of high-quality procedures are involved in a gentle and methodical exfoliation of the painted surface.

Paint Correction

Polishing and waxing are two different processes.

Polish is used to produce a shine by improving the clarity of your paint.

A wax, sealant, or coating is used primarily for protection.  A high-quality wax, sealant, or coating can also enhance the depth of polished paint.  Terms like 'a good wax', 'buff', 'buff job', or 'wax job' are often used by consumers to describe a desire to improve the appearance of their car's paint.  Usually what is meant by these terms are Paint Correction.

What Is Paint Correction?

Clarity comes from a level surface.

It the process of removing the defects in your paint (swirls, scratches, water spots, etched stains) by leveling the paint with microscopic abrasives (polish).  The average person often does not see the swirls, but may see a loss of clarity in the paint.  Most swirls can effectively be removed in a two-step polishing process.  The compounding stage is the aggressive first polishing step which is intended to remove defects.  The refinement step is often referred to as jeweling or finishing step.  The refinement or finishing polishing step removes the damage that the more aggressive step created.  Properly removing the defects while also jeweling the surface restores the gloss to the paint.  Proper paint correction will take a minimum of several hours and typically multiple days.
